Winter 2016 to 2017
Winter 2016 to 2017 Doreen's blog
I’m writing this at the beginning of December and instinctively want to wish you all a very happy and blessed Christmas – but of course by the time you read this is it will be the New Year, so may God be with you, and with us all as a Circuit of Christian Churches throughout 2017. It will be a year of challenge and change for all of us. Politically, culturally, socially the world changes around us at a rate that leaves me bewildered and breathless. Sometimes only Church feels safe and timeless and unchanging – but should it? Our purpose as Church (read Matthew 28: ) is to ‘Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.’ To do this we need to speak the language that people of today understand and offer worship in a way that is a real expression of faith for them. While we need to keep our cherished traditions too, these alone are not enough. The message of salvation, a living relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ His Son, empowered by the Holy Spirit is for everyone!
This poem prayer usually attributed to Sir Francis Drake was quoted in one of our Bible Study groups this week. I think it speaks very clearly in to our situation:-
Disturb us, Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess, we have lost our thirst for the waters of life; Having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity and in our efforts to build a new earth, we have allowed our vision of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wilder seas where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.
We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes;
And to push back the future in strength, courage, hope, and love.
This we ask in the name of our Captain, who is Jesus Christ. Amen?
Amen! Amen!! Amen!!!
Let’s push out our boats into deeper water friends, and may we know God to be truly with us!
Love and Blessings
